April Pond and the Liberal Democrats Protesting Against Bed Cuts

Disgusted by the proposed cuts in community hospital beds in Broadland, which affect St Michael's at Aylsham and Cranmer House in Fakenham, April Pond and the Liberal Democrats pushed a "hospital bed and sick patient" around Aylsham during the town's Christmas Fayre, helped by "doctors".

April Pond said "We have collected over 6000 signatures on our petition against the closures, and have attended the Primary Care Trust meetings which I felt were a complete sham. We wanted to make our point in another way."

"In being forced to repay the £50 million debt that the trust has inherited, Norfolk NHS services are going to suffer badly, and this will be just the beginning."

"The possible closure of these hospitals is ill thought out and does not make financial sense - it would not be possible to offer the same level of care in people's own homes for less than it costs to run these beds, and this can only mean that to make savings, much less care is being proposed."
