250 Concerned Residents Call for Action Against Speeding in Fakenham7.08.08pm GMT Thu 1st Feb 2007 Angry residents have called for an end to dangerous speeding in the centre of Fakenham. Supported by local Liberal Democrat County Councillor, David Callaby, a group of around 250 concerned local people have signed a petition calling for Norfolk County Council's transport chief, Mike Jackson, to do something to tackle the persistent problem of speeding vehicles in the historic town's centre. Cllr Callaby said: "I wholeheartedly support the residents of Fakenham who have signed this petition. Fakenham is growing rapidly and the safety of pedestrians using the town centre needs to be looked at urgently. Too many drivers are going through at unsuitable speeds and putting the lives of others at risk. I believe that the Council should be looking at introducing 20mph speed limits in the town. Action is also needed to reduce the numbers of parked cars in the town centre as they are another part of the problem." The petition was organised by Vince Stewart, landlord of the Bull Free house in Bridge Street. Mr. Stewart commented: "Whilst we do not know how to solve the problem of speeding cars, we do know that something needs to be done. With Fakenham being a market town, a lot of families and young children are shopping and walking through the town and we feel there is an accident just waiting to happen."
